HETHERINGTON HAILS PASSAGE OF PET TRUST BILL

by: jdooley Thursday, June 4th, 2009

HARTFORD- State Rep. John Hetherington (R-125) said that he was “extremely pleased” at the unanimous passage by both the Connecticut House and Senate of a bill that allows a person to create a trust to provide continuing care for a pet after the owner’s death. Hetherington stressed that the bill was a joint effort including Sen. Toni Boucher (R-26) and Rep. Russ Morin (D-28) to whom he extended thanks. The bill now heads for the Governor’s desk.“This was a genuine bipartisan effort to give the people of Connecticut the same opportunity available to pet owners in almost 40 other states. I have worked on this for some time, and I am very happy we could do it now.”According to Hetherington, the concept has been talked about for several years in Connecticut, but could never gain a consensus. “We listed carefully to all interested parties, including the Attorney General, the Connecticut Bar Association, and practicing attorneys. I think that paid-off.”

If signed by the Governor, the new law will be effective October 1, 2009.
